Overview

Mrs Dalloway begins with an ordinary decision: Clarissa Dalloway will buy the flowers herself. Yet the June morning immediately opens into remembered rooms, old conversations, city noise, illness, war, and the irreversible striking of Big Ben. Virginia Woolf makes a walk through Westminster feel charged with a central question: how can a single present moment contain so many versions of a life?

Clarissa moves through London while thought moves differently, returning to Bourton and Peter Walsh, then catching on traffic, neighbors, public ceremony, or a phrase remembered long after other details have vanished. The city is not passive scenery. Motor cars, omnibuses, bands, barrel organs, footsteps, and an aeroplane become part of a shared rhythm, while each observer builds a private London from sensation and memory. Big Ben's “leaden circles” give measured time an audible presence against the mind's freer movement.

The opening is exhilarating because its scale changes without warning. Flowers and preparations coexist with mortality; a fresh morning carries traces of influenza and a war declared over but not equally finished for everyone. Woolf's attention passes between Clarissa and those who glimpse her, creating intimacy without enclosing the novel inside one viewpoint. The result is a reading experience in which consciousness feels both solitary and woven into the life of the street.

"Kendini çok genç hissediyordu; aynı zamanda anlatılmaz derecede yaşlı. Bir bıçak gibi kesip her şeyin içinden geçiyordu; aynı zamanda dışarıdaydı, seyre dalıyordu."
