Charles Bukowski

Charles Bukowski (1920–1994) was a German-born American poet, novelist and short-story writer whose direct voice depicts Los Angeles, marginal work and damaged lives. Post Office turns routine labor, exhaustion and petty authority into a darkly comic account narrated by his recurring alter ego, Henry Chinaski. Ham On Rye looks backward to childhood, family violence, poverty and alienation, giving the abrasive persona a more vulnerable history. Women examines desire and loneliness through unstable relationships, while Dangling in the Tournefortia shows the quick, narrative movement of his free verse. Bukowski's bluntness can be provocative, but its strongest effect is to expose self-deception, economic pressure and the wish to survive without false dignity. Post Office supplies the compact workplace novel; Ham On Rye provides the deeper autobiographical foundation for his fictional world.
