The Weary O’Mearys: One Goal One Season One Story

It’s the early 1990s and Fergal McCafferty is an underage GAA coach. When an opportunity to take charge of an adult football team comes his way, he is very tempted. Despite a complete lack of experience beyond U14 and a litany of cautionary tales from friends and fellow coaches, Fergal takes the job. This is the story of a season spent with O’Mearys GFC or, as Fergal named them, The Weary O’Mearys. Grab a seat, put your feet up and get ready for a tale of picnics, pool teams, casualty lists, Albert’s Field, the water cycle, huffers, puffers, Blackthorn boots, Willie 1 and 2, running tracks, retirements, resurrections, whales, gazelles, ketchup, Noah’s ark and yes……football. What a season!
