E. J. Mellow's Dance of a Burning Sea follows Niya Bassette, one of the three magical sisters known as the Mousai, as a secret from her past draws her back into conflict with pirate lord Alōs Ezra. In the hidden Thief Kingdom of Aadilor, Niya's dance carries dangerous power, but Alōs knows something that could compromise both her freedom and her family's oath. When he seeks a pardon for smuggling, their competing bargains force Niya aboard his ship.
The voyage shifts the story from the protected kingdom to open water, where Niya must contend with a ruthless crew, political danger, and an attraction that unsettles her distrust of Alōs. Their uneasy alliance develops through negotiation, with instant loyalty impossible: each needs the other while guarding motives that could destroy the truce. The maritime setting gives the romance a constant pressure of pursuit and uncertain allegiance.
As the second Mousai novel, Dance of a Burning Sea expands the series through a sister whose art is also a weapon. Its strongest tension comes from the clash between duty to a chosen family and the desire to define one's own life beyond an inherited role.
