by Gorky, Maxim
This is one of the most powerful and sincere of Maxim Gorky's dramas. The power of the play lies first in its sincerity. It is a drama of the underworld; a play of derelict humanity, but it is not sordid or depressing. It shows life as it is, and is rich in sympathy. And the end of the play, instead of bringing an impossible cure for the incurable shows the rift in the clouds that is caused by the deathless dream of happiness that can come to all of us, when the opportunity is given.
