Overview

G. A. Henty places a young Saxon thane beside England's last Anglo-Saxon king in Wulf the Saxon Illustrated. Wulf of Steyning serves King Harold Godwinson during the violent years preceding the Norman Conquest. Personal loyalty gives the historical campaign its center: Wulf's advancement depends on courage, judgment, and his willingness to protect a sovereign whose kingdom faces pressure from several directions.

The Welsh wars test him first. Wulf helps capture a castle, then risks his life to rescue Harold after a shipwreck. These episodes move between siege, sea danger, and political service, showing why the king comes to rely on him. The scale widens when Norse forces threaten England and Wulf fights at the Battle of Stamford Bridge.

Victory cannot end the crisis because William's Norman invasion follows. Wulf and his comrades remain with Harold as events advance toward the Battle of Hastings. Henty uses a fictional participant to lead younger readers through eleventh-century Britain and Normandy, joining real rulers and battles to an adventure plot. The story's appeal lies in seeing national upheaval from the position of someone who must act before history's outcome is known, with loyalty carrying both honor and irreversible risk.
