Overview

The Telegraph Boy is the story of Frank Kavanagh, a boy who is forced to live with his unkind uncle and aunt after his father dies suddenly. His uncle, who is unwilling to support him, urges him to move out. Frank decides to get from outside Hartford, Connecticut to New York City, where he works in various jobs before becoming a telegraph boy. From beginning to end, "The Telegraph Boy by Horatio Alger" provides the reader with action and adventure. Horatio Alger Jr. (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was an American author who wrote young adult novels about impoverished boys who rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through good works. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on the United States during the Gilded Age.
