Overview

Even in modern times, Percy Bysshe Shelley's atheism, feminism, vegetarianism, and nonviolence are considered “radical” ideas Even in modern times, Percy Bysshe Shelley's atheism, feminism, vegetarianism, and nonviolence are considered “ radical” ideas. However, he is taught and read on mainstream US high school and college campuses, so he does have some mainstream acceptance. However, during the British Romantic period, he wrote 34 poems and 20 essays but was unpopular and feared because of those “radical” positions. The Sensitive Plant is a narrative three-act poem he wrote in 1820, two years before his death in a boating accident at age 30. The sensuous way he uses language to describe beauty, love, ugliness, decay, and death helps readers face complex topics. This edition contains all of the original hardback and Laurence Hausman artwork, including an Ernest Rhys’ essay, plus additional biographical information not included in the original.
