Overview

Newly appointed to command an unfamiliar ship, an unnamed captain feels separate from both vessel and crew as they wait in the Gulf of Siam. During a solitary anchor watch he finds Leggatt clinging to the side ladder. The exhausted swimmer says he escaped from the nearby Sephora after killing a crewman during a violent confrontation.

The captain hides Leggatt in his own cabin and begins to think of him as a double or second self. Keeping the fugitive concealed requires deception, careful timing, and a growing withdrawal from the officers whose trust he must earn. When the Sephora's captain searches the ship, professional courtesy and private identification pull the young commander in opposite directions.

Joseph Conrad's The Secret Sharer turns a maritime crisis into a test of identity and command. The confined setting makes every sound, movement, and order carry two meanings: one for the crew and another for the hidden man. A useful reading focus is the captain's divided attention. His sympathy for Leggatt may help him recognize qualities within himself, yet it also creates risks for everyone who depends on his judgment.
