D. 1316-1323): With an Appendix Contemporaneous and Other Illustrative Documents The fine series of Episcopal Registers belonging to the diocese of Winchester begins with the Register of John de Pontissara, l who was appointed to the Bishoprick by Pope Martin IV, at Orvieto, on Tuesday, the 9th of June, 1282, and was consecrated on the Sunday following. He died at Wolveseye, on Saturday, the 5th of December, 1304, in the twenty-third year of his episcopate. It is a finely written and well preserved volume of 226 folios, measuring ize by 9 inches. Although in some respects imperfect, it contains an interesting collection of documents, scarcely excelled in variety, value, and importance by any of the succeeding Registers. The next in order is that of his successor, Brother henry'wodeloke, 'who from the dignified position of Prior of the Cathedral Monastery was elected to the Episcopal chair in January, 1304-5, and occupied the See till the day of his death, which occurred at Farnham Castle on Monday, the 28th of June, 1316, in the twelfth year of his Consecration. His Register is a stout volume of 395 folios, the parchment leaves being a little larger than those of the previous volume. It is a fine specimen of an Episcopal Register, written in a larger and freer hand than the other; and it contains an almost unrivalled collection of documents, many of them of considerable interest historically, including a valuable series of his Visitation decrees, sent to the Religious Houses of the Diocese.
