The Pathfinder

The Pathfinder marked the return of Natty Bumppo, the hero of James Fenimore Cooper’s Leatherstocking Tales, thirteen years after the publication of The Prairie. For a time, Bumppo’s thoughts turn toward the domestic, but in the end Bumppo returns to his proper home in the wilderness. Chronologically the third of the five novels to feature Bumppo, The Pathfinder is distinguished by its depiction of the middle-aged hero in love. The Pathfinder was made into a 1952 movie starring Jay Silverheels as Chingachgook, and has twice been filmed for television, most recently in a 1996 production starring Kevin Dillon and Graham Greene.
