Overview

A manuscript recovered near Greenland frames The Land That Time Forgot as Bowen J. Tyler's account of a voyage driven wildly off course. During World War I, a German submarine sinks the passenger ship carrying Tyler and Lys La Rue. Survivors seize U-33, lose it, and regain it as sabotage and mutual suspicion push British and German enemies far from any safe port.

Low fuel, poisoned provisions, and damaged navigation lead the submarine into Antarctic waters. There the crew finds Caprona, a cliff-ringed island believed lost for centuries. A freshwater current reveals a subterranean passage, and U-33 emerges into a tropical river inhabited by creatures extinct elsewhere.

Caprona changes as the expedition moves through it. Climate and wildlife seem to progress across the island, turning geography into an evolutionary puzzle. The castaways establish Fort Dinosaur near an inland sea, where Bowen J. Tyler, Lys La Rue, Bradley, and German commander Von Schoenvorts depend on an alliance that wartime loyalties can fracture at any moment.

Edgar Rice Burroughs combines submarine suspense with a lost-world adventure whose central danger is discovery itself. Mechanical survival, prehistoric predators, and conflict inside the expedition remain inseparable. The island promises fuel and refuge, yet every route deeper into its interior raises new questions about what Caprona preserves and how its inhabitants developed.
