This, the second in the Barsoom series, finds John Carter back on Mars after ten years’ absence. Thankfully, his epic odyssey in A Princess of Mars was a success, and his wife and friends survived the catastrophic event at the end of that novel. But Carter finds himself taking on successively powerful foes this time. At first it’s just the plant men and white apes. But once he gets past them, it’s the “First Born”, or supposed “gods” of Mars. And if he can possibly manage to steal past them, he’ll have to face the dreaded “Black Pirates of Barsoom”. But the Black Pirates stand between Carter and the strongest force on Mars—the goddess Issus herself. The odds of him ever reaching Issus and seeing his beloved Dejah Thoris again are slim; but with his long-sword in his hands and his friends by his side, he is a truly formidable opponent. And those who survive crossing his path will not soon forget the name of John Carter. The Gods of Mars was the third story ever written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. First serialized in All Story between January and May of 1913, it continued where A Princess of Mars left off. Although it was serialized in 1913, it wouldn’t become published in book form until 1918. The concept was brought by his editor while Burroughs was working on Tarzan of the Apes. After Tarzan was finished, Burroughs would pen The Gods of Mars that same year. Black & Gold House of Books strives to provide the best quality literature at a fair price.
