
Charles Darwin separates the study of expression from physiognomy. His concern is not the claim that permanent facial features reveal character, but the observable movements through which emotion appears in humans and animals. The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals develops its inquiry through comparison, physiological detail, and debate with earlier writers. Darwin credits Charles Bell with linking expressive movement to respiration, including the involuntary contraction of muscles around the eyes during forceful expiration. He also considers work by Le Brun, Camper, Moreau, and Donders. Describing a frown or a lowered mouth is only a beginning; a satisfactory account must explain the origin and function of the pattern instead of attaching a poetic interpretation to it.
This emphasis makes the book useful to readers interested in evolution, psychology, behavior, and the history of science. Facial movement becomes evidence, not decoration. By asking how bodily actions acquire expressive meaning and how those actions compare across species, Darwin brings emotion into the same patient, causal framework that shaped his broader study of life.
