Overview

Jimmy Torrance leaves college with confidence built on athletics, leadership, and an assumption that effort naturally earns a place on the winning side. Chicago gives him a harsher education. Boxing, swimming, baseball, and football have trained his body, but they do not translate neatly into stable work or a decent wage.

The city rearranges his moral categories as quickly as his ambitions. People respectable society dismisses as criminals show loyalty and generosity; citizens protected by status reveal a capacity for exploitation. Jimmy's struggle is therefore not only economic. He must learn to judge character without relying on labels supplied by class or reputation.

Edgar Rice Burroughs uses the search for employment to move The Efficiency Expert Illustrated through workplaces and relationships rarely associated with a privileged graduate. A safe-cracker can become dependable, and a marginalized woman can possess more integrity than the people who condemn her. Love enters this unsettled landscape as another challenge to Jimmy's inherited expectations.

The novel's irony lies in its title. Efficiency promises an objective measure of worth, yet Jimmy encounters a labor market shaped by chance, prejudice, and power. His real expertise develops through failure: Chicago forces him to separate performance from substance and social approval from decency.
