Remembered as an originator of American gothic fiction, Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous works include the poem The Raven and the short story The Telltale Heart. The Complete Poems of Edgar Allan Poe includes Poe’s famous works of poetry such as The Raven and Lenore, we well as poems from his youth and other pieces that were not published during his lifetime. Edgar Allan Poe (1809 - 1849) was born in Boston to actors David and Elizabeth Poe. Poe’s father abandoned that family when he was a year old and his mother died of tuberculosis. Poe was taken in by successful merchant John Allan and subsequently took on the Allan name. As a young man Poe attended university and enlisted in the military, but both positions were complicated by his gambling debts and caused a rift with his benefactor John Allan. Poe began to publish his poems following his time in the military and the publication of The Raven in 1845 was an immediate sensation. Poe died in Baltimore in 1849 under unexplained circumstances.
