Evelyn Underhill (1875–1941) was internationally renowned as a prolific writer on mysticism; in this classic book, first published in 1925, she traverses the Christian centuries from St Paul and Cassian to her contemporary Sadhu Sundar Singh, examining the different backgrounds and approaches of more than 40 figures who illustrate the tradition's development – 'a few of those whose greatness is most closely connected with their dependence on, and contribution to, the family life of the household of faith'.
