by R. L. Stine
R. L. Stine’s Monster Blood sends Evan Ross to stay with his nearly deaf great-aunt Kathryn while his parents search for a new home. In an old toy shop, Evan and his new friend Andy buy a sealed can of green slime labeled Monster Blood. The substance first behaves like a novelty toy, but it keeps expanding, escapes every container, and changes Evan’s dog Trigger after he eats some. Evan’s efforts to hide the growing mass become harder as local bullies and his aunt’s unsettling cat add pressure.
The third Goosebumps novel builds fear from a familiar childhood object whose rules cannot be trusted. Growth supplies both the comic spectacle and the danger: the slime occupies more space, acquires appetite, and makes every attempt at control temporary. Evan and Andy solve problems actively, yet the adults around them initially have little reason to believe such an impossible explanation. Monster Blood keeps its horror accessible through quick reversals, cliffhangers, and exaggerated physical action. Beneath the goo, the story turns a child’s lack of authority into suspense and asks what happens when something purchased for fun refuses to remain a toy.
