For this anthology, Michael Grant has selected what he believes to be the best translations of passages that represent and reveal the Roman literary genius. The translators range from Sir Philip Sidney and Alexander Pope to contemporaries; the texts start with Plautus (200 BC and end with St Augustine (AD 400). The pieces demonstrate Latin literature developing from Hellenistic imitations to true originality of thought and style, but always infused with the forthrightness - the clarity of meaning - that is perculiarly Roman.
