This book shows what few may realize, that Anton Chekhov was an eloquent writer of stories. Chekhov died in 1904 and these six stories were written in the last years of his life, when he was dying of tuberculosis. The stories, like the plays, deal with people who live out their lives in a world that is slowly but surely falling apart. But in the stories, even at the end, there is always the hope of renewal, often through the experience of love. Chekhov has been fortunate in this, his first Canadian translation. David Helwig's reading is at once undeceived and tender, at once loving and completely honest. This is a true meeting of minds.
