Overview

After their father's death unsettles two very different brothers, Sally Rooney's Intermezzo A Novel follows Peter and Ivan Koubek as grief alters the stories they tell about love, competence, and one another. Peter is a successful Dublin lawyer in his thirties whose controlled public life conceals divided attachments to Sylvia, a woman he has long loved, and Naomi, a younger woman who resists easy definition. Ivan, a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player, sees himself as socially awkward and distant from Peter's polished world. His meeting with Margaret, an older woman carrying complications of her own, gives him an intimacy that feels both unexpected and precarious. The brothers' romantic lives unfold separately, yet each exposes assumptions they have made about the other's weakness and privilege.

Rooney changes rhythm and perspective to match the brothers' contrasting minds. Peter's sections move through fractured, pressured thought, while Ivan's attention often seeks patterns and explicit rules; neither style grants complete knowledge of the people around them. The novel treats grief less as a single crisis than as a force that rearranges desire, shame, resentment, and family memory over time. Age differences and unconventional relationships are not reduced to puzzles with one correct answer, because the emotional stakes lie in how honestly each person can acknowledge dependence and uncertainty. Its resonance comes from showing reconciliation as a difficult revision of self-understanding rather than a simple return to an earlier bond.

I love this book. I'm just amazed at how well it was written. It explains grief so well and how different people deal with it. Sally Rooney is slowly becoming my favorite author.
