by John Green
Giants from the Past: In October, 1967, Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin emerged from the Bluff Creek valley in the northwest corner of California with a short strip of 16 mm. movie film that showed an upright creature almost seven feet tall, but looking like a huge ape, striding across a sandbar. Everything about the sasquatch investigation has been different since that time. The movie became by far the most significant single piece of evidence that there are giant bipedal apes living in western North America, and although science has chosen to ignore it no one has ever been able to establish that there is anything the matter with it. Before the movie hit the headlines only a minority of people were aware that there were reports of hairy giants being seen in the vast forested areas of western North America, and that giant tracks resembling human footprints had been found, photographed and cast from time to time. There had been a flare-up of interest in 1924 when a group of miners claimed to have been bombarded by giant hairy apes on Mount St. Helens in southwestern Washinton, and there was some degree of awareness in British Columbia of Indian traditions of hairy "Sasquatch" giants that occasionally came down from their mountain retreat....John Green is the pre-eminent authority on the fascinating question of whether mankind shares North America with another upright-walking primate, having researched the subject for more than 20 years and assembled a file of more than 2,000 reports. A graduate of the University of British Columbia and the Columbia University Graduate School of journalism in New York, and a newspaperman of more than 30 years experience, he is uniquely qualified to be the chronicler of the investigation as well as one of the leading participants His previous books have sold close to 200,000 copies.
