Ziya Gökalp (1876–1924) was a Turkish thinker, sociologist, poet, and educator who became a principal theorist of Turkism. He examined how culture, religion, education, and social solidarity might shape a modern political community. The Principles of Turkism gives the most direct route into his systematic vocabulary of nation and culture. Turkish Nationalism and Western Civilization: Selected Essays broadens that view through writings on social change and the relation between inherited forms and Western institutions. These works are useful to read together: the first concentrates the argument, while the selected essays reveal how it changes across subjects. Gökalp’s thought does not treat culture as an untouched relic. It asks how shared language, education, and values are organized, transmitted, and revised. This blend of sociology and programmatic writing explains his lasting influence.
