Yaşar Nuri Öztürk (1951–2016) was a Turkish theologian, academic, and writer concerned with Qur'anic interpretation, Islamic thought, and Sufism. The Eye of the Heart: An Introduction to Sufism and the Major Tariqats of Anatolia and the Balkans offers an English-language map of mystical practice, terminology, and institutional lineages across two connected regions. Rather than treating Sufism as a single undifferentiated tradition, the book distinguishes spiritual concepts from the historical forms taken by major tariqats. Its movement between ideas and organizations makes it useful to readers who need both a conceptual introduction and a regional frame. The volume is a revised and abridged English rendering of Öztürk's earlier Turkish study, so it also shows how he recast his scholarship for a wider audience. The Eye of the Heart is the essential English entry into his work on mystical experience and religious orders.
