William Golding

William Golding was an English novelist who tested ideas of civilisation, power, fear, and moral choice through allegory and historically imagined worlds. Lord of the Flies places a group of schoolboys on an island and turns their attempt at self-government into a stark study of authority and violence. The Inheritors moves much further back in time, presenting encounter and loss through a perspective unlike that of conventional historical fiction.

The Spire confines ambition and spiritual certainty within the building of a vast cathedral, where vision and obsession become difficult to separate. Rites of Passage begins a sea trilogy in which a long voyage exposes class, judgement, and the limits of a narrator's understanding; Close Quarters continues that enclosed social experiment at sea. Golding's novels make setting perform intellectual work: island, cathedral, and ship each become a pressure chamber for human behaviour.
