Sophocles

Sophocles writes tragedy about law, conscience, power, family, fate, knowledge, and responsibility. Oedipus the King follows a ruler investigating a city's disaster until inquiry turns toward his own history. Sight and blindness become ways of asking what it means to possess evidence yet resist its implications. Antigone places civic command against obligations to family and conscience, making every delay deepen the cost.

Ajax examines honor, humiliation, violence, and the treatment of an enemy after death. Sophocles's characters receive warnings, but certainty in their own position makes another perspective difficult to accept. The plays do not make fate the only explanation for catastrophe. How knowledge is sought, who is allowed to speak, and whether authority can revise a decision all shape the outcome. Responsibility therefore remains active even when characters confront conditions they did not choose.
