René Goscinny

As the French comics writer behind Astérix, René Goscinny (1926–1977) made historical parody move with the speed of adventure. Working with Albert Uderzo, he built a Roman-era world in which verbal jokes, social types and carefully timed reversals matter as much as the plot. Asterix the Gaul establishes the small village that resists imperial power; Asterix and the Goths turns a border crossing into a comedy of rival customs. Asterix at the Olympic Games uses sport and rules to test the heroes' ingenuity, while Asterix and Cleopatra sets their confidence against architecture, court politics and national pride. Goscinny's scripts reward both quick reading and attention to the joke beneath the joke, giving minor characters distinctive voices without slowing the story. Asterix the Gaul supplies the clearest map of the series, whereas Asterix and Cleopatra shows how far its satire can travel.
