Peyami Safa (1899–1961) was a Turkish novelist, journalist, and essayist whose fiction examines psychological conflict, illness, loneliness, and the pressure of cultural change. Surgical Ward 9 gives the most immediate route into his narrative method: physical pain, poverty, jealousy, and self-knowledge are held inside the restricted perspective of a sick young man. Novel of Hesitation widens the inquiry toward indecision and the unstable motives shaping intimate relationships. Reflections on the Turkish Revolution belongs to Safa’s nonfictional side, where modernization and cultural identity become explicit subjects of argument rather than dramatic experience. Reading the novel and essays together reveals how the same East–West tension moves between character, setting, and public debate. Safa’s strength lies in making an idea felt as an inward pressure before naming it as a social question.
