Turkish military leader, statesman, and writer Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938) led the national struggle, founded the Republic of Turkey, and served as its first president. His writing is best approached through The Great Speech, the English title of Nutuk, which recounts the years from 1919 to 1927 through documents, speeches, and his own political assessment. Geometri represents a very different form of public instruction: a concise work connected to his effort to establish Turkish terms for geometry. The Great Speech gives readers a sustained historical narrative in which decisions are explained and contested; Geometri reveals his interest in language reform and education through precise technical vocabulary. Reading the two side by side shows how Atatürk used prose for sharply different purposes. One records and interprets a political transformation, while the other reorganizes the language of a scientific subject for learners.
