Mehmet Akif Ersoy (1873–1936) was a Turkish poet, writer, and translator best known as the author of Turkey's national anthem and the poetry cycle Safahat. Safahat gathers seven books written across the late Ottoman years and the early Republic, bringing faith, poverty, labor, war, moral responsibility, and social decay into dramatic verse. Ersoy often builds a poem from overheard speech or a sharply observed scene, allowing argument to emerge through people rather than abstract declaration alone. The collection moves between neighborhood life, sermons, journeys, political crisis, and the losses of war; its language can be satirical, compassionate, or openly exhortative. Safahat is the essential point of entry because it shows both the documentary range of Ersoy's social observation and the religious and ethical questions that organize his poetry.
