Kevin J. Wetmore Jr. is an American scholar of theatre, performance, film, horror, and popular culture. A professor of Theatre Arts at Loyola Marymount University, he trained at Bates College, the University of Leeds, and the University of Pittsburgh and has written on Japanese and African theatre, Greek tragedy, zombies, horror cinema, and adaptation. Eaters of the Dead: Myths and Realities of Cannibal Monsters traces figures that consume human bodies across ancient myth, religious narrative, colonial writing, folklore, film, television, and modern horror. Wetmore distinguishes literal practices, ritual accusations, and fictional monsters rather than treating every story as evidence of historical cannibalism. The subject carries a history of racist and colonial labeling, so reports about supposedly 'savage' peoples require source criticism and attention to who produced the account.
