İlhan Berk (1918–2008) was a Turkish poet, writer, and translator whose career moved from an early social-realist phase toward the linguistic experiment of the Second New movement. History of a Face turns the human face into a field of memory, image, and cultural association rather than a stable portrait. The Book of Things reflects his fascination with objects and naming, while Uplift presents another compact route into a poetry driven by fragments, sudden correspondences, and shifts of scale. These English-language volumes reveal why Berk resists a single theme: the body, the city, ordinary objects, geography, and art continually exchange places in his work. The Book of Things gives the clearest view of his object-centred imagination; History of a Face offers a more concentrated encounter with his visual and associative method.
