Carl Friedrich Keil was a nineteenth-century German Lutheran theologian known for conservative Old Testament exegesis. Born in Saxony in 1807, he studied theology and taught biblical interpretation and Oriental languages at Dorpat. His best-known publication is the multi-volume Commentary on the Old Testament produced with Franz Delitzsch. The Bookspace record names Keil, but the complete series is a collaboration: Keil and Delitzsch covered different biblical books, and editions should preserve both contributors where applicable. Their commentary combines close attention to Hebrew, historical material, and Christian theological interpretation. It is also a product of nineteenth-century confessional scholarship and often argues against emerging historical-critical approaches.
