Beatrix Potter

Beatrix Potter (1866–1943) was an English author, illustrator and conservationist who joined close observation of nature to quietly comic animal stories. The Tale of Peter Rabbit sends a disobedient young rabbit into Mr McGregor's garden, balancing danger, appetite and the relief of returning home. The Tale of Benjamin Bunny extends that world through family loyalty, while The Tale of Tom Kitten and The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck explore the friction between domestic order and animal independence. The Tailor of Gloucester makes small acts of help central to its wonder; The Tale of Mr Jeremy Fisher turns a pond excursion into an elegant comic mishap. Peter Rabbit is the clearest entrance to Potter's art and narrative rhythm. Benjamin Bunny works well next, whereas Jemima Puddle-Duck or The Tailor of Gloucester offers a self-contained change of setting and mood.
